416 Optical Wavelength Converter

Web Product Page Image

For fiber systems that require aÌýfiber optic rotary jointÌý(FORJ) havingÌýmore than 52 fibers, an Optical Wavelength Converter (OWC)Ìýmay be a practical alternative solution. Since optical fibersÌýcan carry multiple wavelengths simultaneously, this featureÌýcan be used to increase system data capacity and reduce theÌýnumber of fibers required in a FORJ or umbilical cable,Ìýparticularly when existing systems are upgraded or newÌýsystems require capacity for future expansion. Most opticalÌýdata links use only 1 or 2 common wavelengths, so by usingÌýoptical wavelength conversion, many independent links canÌýbe combined on a single fiber, freeing up fibers for additionalÌýchannels.

The Focal Model 416 OWC is a 3U Eurocard rack with dualÌýredundant power supplies and up to 12 separate wavelengthÌýconverter cards, also known as optical-electrical convertersÌý(OEO). Each OEO card provides 8 wavelength converters toÌýcombine 8 fibers (4 in each direction) onto a single fiber, thusÌýreducing the number of fibers required in a FORJ or umbilicalÌýby a factor of 8 to 1. A corresponding OEC rack on the otherÌýside of the FORJ converts the wavelengths back to theirÌýoriginal optical format and number of fibers. Typical opticalÌýlinks, such as Ethernet, use one fiber for transit and one forÌýreceive, so each OEO card pair supports four suchÌýbidirectional Ethernet ports. The OWC also functions as aÌýrepeater, providing boosted optical outputs that effectivelyÌýnegate the optical loss of the FORJ.

All products can be modified to meet specific requirements. PleaseÌýcontact our engineering expertsÌýto assist with configuration of EOE converters to match your optical signals. Installation, commissioning and service is available.

OEO converters are configured with transceivers to support aÌýrange of data formats, data rates, wavelengths, and opticalÌýpower levels that are compatible with the external devices.ÌýEach card can be factory configured to match the types ofÌýoptical signal inputs/outputs required, e.g. Fast Ethernet,ÌýGigabit Ethernet, ATM, HD SDI, etc. Cards are available forÌýboth multimode and singlemode inputs, and since the OEOÌýcards are unpluggable, they are easily replaced in the field toÌýsupport changes to the system requirements. The modulesÌýare housed in either a flameproof enclosureÌý(Ex d) for use in a hazardous area or in a stainless steelÌýjunction box for use in a safe area. Ingress protection isÌýIP66.
